Bizarro Wonderful Ride

This non-traditional animated movie is a ride of fun and weird, wrapped into comedy dipped into mystery but more than that is a tale of the subconscious of the subcultures that live in North America. One should take its time watching this movie and enjoying every little clin d'oeil made to classical movies as well as all the pop culture references often forgotten by our collective memory. This is a triumph for independent animated movies, it is very clear that the writers and animators decided not to give in to the culture of making money copying ideas out there that were also made with the only spirit of profit. Hopefully Victor La Cruz will become the new underground Rey of old school salsa motivated stories. Great movie, Great plot and a weird feeling all around, in a good way!

Goodness me..

I want 90 minutes of my life back after watching this pure and utter rubbish.

Whilst Asian and Jamaicans between the ages of 9 and 40 might be horrified to learn that people outside of London really don't give a sun dried dingleberry about how 'cool' it is to be a 'gangsta',deal in drugs and sleep with free prostitutes, quiet by accident this film shows all that is wrong with Britain today. Whilst these gangs do exist in some form or another, clearly this film is the director living out a fantasy that he cannot or doesn't have the guts to peruse.

Herein lies the charm of this film,however..the director clearly meant this to be a ' look at how cool it is to be black/Asian gangsta from London ', but what it does articulate very clearly is that only an imbecile would agree with the director. The acting is plain rubbish,the story line cringeworthy and the moralistic bromance ( no doubt drive by one of those ethical 'gangsta codes') is incredibly toe curling.

If you want violence for the sake of violence, then you might get a kick out of this. If, however, you want a good old giggle about how 'cool' jamiacan and Asian gangs perceive THEMSELVES to be...then you might wet your pants laughing.

This film is utterly hideous. I still want my 90 minutes of my life back...yeah, bruv?

A fun movie

This film tied for the audience award at Cinequest and this film was one of four films I managed to catch while at the festival. It's a decent little flick and the acting was fine, but for some reason every time I watch John Ratzenberger I can't help but think about Cliff from Cheers. Shelly Cole did an amazing job and I always liked her from Gilmore Girls. The story is supposed to take place in Reno, Nevada but the filmmakers use parts of Napa Valley to double which I could always tell which location they we're shooting in. In the end, it was just alright and semi- entertaining. The average film goer will probably like it.

The film begins with a mysterious gypsy-like musician leading the crowds at Waterloo station in London in a dance to the title song. At the station, two strangers, Rikki Thukral and Alvira Khan, wait for their respective fiancés. Rikki is a fun-loving Punjabi boy from Bhatinda who lives in Southall, while Alvira is a middle class Pakistani girl from Lahore who is more assimilated into British culture. The two share a table in a café together and to kill the time they talk about how they met their partners-to-be. Rikki, handsome but primitive in the Desi way, says that he met his fiancé, Anaida Raza, at the Hôtel Ritz Paris, the same night that Diana, Princess of Wales and Dodi Al-Fayed left the hotel to take their last journey together. Disappointing, even Preity Zinta disappoints.

I love Bollywood films. Ravishing, well-invested musicals, song and dance, dialogues which are larger than life, wonderful actors, strong characters. The song numbers have been an artistic tradition Hindi films, and what particularly amazes me about all these films is the complete irrelevance of the song numbers to the film's story itself (unless it's a film like Dil To Pagal Hai, where the music is part of the script).

I think Jhoom Barabar Jhoom is a brave attempt to make a film with the songs being part of the screenplay. But even then, it just doesn't work. Why? Because there is NO screenplay. The entire film is a big dance show. And it shouldn't be like this. When there are no songs, the film consists of silly jokes and plastic "acting". Some sequences are so ridiculous that you start hating anyone who's been ever involved with this film. It is intended to be funny and crazy, which is a good purpose, but this film manages to be neither this nor that and instead, it sadly ends up being a big silly show. I do admit that the songs are well danced and catchy, but they become tiresome at some point, mainly because most of them are actually the same song in different versions.

The acting (not that it can be called acting in this case) is bad. Abhishek is annoying and miscast. Pretentious performance. Preity, an actress I like immensely, is her usual bubbly and vivacious self, but here, somehow lifeless. The fact that a great actress like Preity could even think of appearing in this film makes me want to slap her. Bobby and Lara are terrible. They ham, overact, and even in the dance numbers get overshadowed by the leading stars (at least here they make some sense). Lara is particularly horrible as a prostitute with her fake French accent. All in all, I do recommend to watch it if you intend to go and dance through the entire film. Quite a special watch buhaaaa...

what a great movie

well i went not knowing what this movie was about, or even 'what' Colma was! wow was i surprised, this movie was very well done for low budget. the writing witty and funny, also moving at times. The acting great, the music was real good too had me tapping my feet ;o) the musical numbers were well choreographed with some great touches. I think that Mendoza did a great job and i am looking forward to more from him. i loved L.A Renigan! she rocks. Please go and support this movie it really deserves it! I gave this movie 10 out of 10.. not because it was one of the best .. but because so much effort must have gone into the making of it, on such a low budget.
