Review :
a vanguard ideal, a daring investment
"Chess-King's Soul in Butcher's Body" is inherently a long-standing fairy tail of The Vietnamese. Processing to change a rural flavour which adults tell kids, to a piece of modern comedy which bringing adult title, is always a typical investment for small film producers. The movie industry of Vietnam at the time of making "Chess-King's Soul in Butcher's Body" was no exception. At that time the movie time has made daring decisions for the contents, the most obvious one is to show some aspects on homosexual love (At that time almost Vietnameses were still had the heavy thoughts and the discrimination on 3rd sexual). After 7 year to the time of my writing, the view is somehow different, and the one we are watching now is a successful films, and also, we have admired the idea of the pioneers. Yes, the film delivers a successful impressive for a innovating industry cinema: FIRST, a completed storyline from the beginning to the end, with many jazzy spiral details; Although the open is somehow hard to understand (even for a Vietnamese like me), but after and after, it's more clear and you can perceive the typical flavour of Saigon's comedy cinema. The ending in the market surely the funnist scene. Second, an investment of film's scenery and recording is worthy: many typical locations of H.C.M city, the unusual color and smell of a busy and dusty city in Vietnam. And at last, the set of higgledy-piggledy comedy casts has created a perfect coordination, alongside, Johnny Tri Nguyen has also stunned the audience by his perfect "no-fighting" role. Though there are some mistakes like the sound is not great, some confusing circumstances, some unreasonable features(for example, the sewer in Saigon is never that big like in the movie...) but the vanguard comedy has proved that if having an adequate investment for contents and casting, Vietnam's cinema could create quality and modern products.
