Good Movie

This was a very good comedy. It really kept me laughing from start to finish. Good movie to see with your friends or your significant other. Good movie writing. This movie should have ran on the bug screen. Jill Marie and Kenny young have good chemistry. I hope they make more movies together. Everyones's favorite 'Girfriend' meets the all around good guy. Jill was hot. It is always good to see Terry Vaughn one of my favorite ghetto girls(I mean that in a good way). Excellent twist of fate in this movie. It brings real meaning to the phrase "Becareful what you ask for" or "Don't start something you cannot finish." This would be a good movie for movie night with family and friends. I can't wait until the next movie comes out.

Mental, a film by Slamdance award winning screenwriter Tom Russell served as the genesis for the 2006 feature film "Mr. Dungbeetle". It tells the story of Doctor Jay Stackhouse - a board-appointed psychiatrist striving to reclaim five mental patients led by a charismatic schizophrenic named Phillip. Doctor Stackhouse's task is complicated by the patients' shared delusion that they have been chosen to protect the sovereign shores of the United States from drug smugglers. Doctor Stackhouse soon realizes that the enemy is none other than his own colleague - the institution's senior psychiatrist, who fundamentally disagrees with Doctor Stackhouse's approach. Turd Warning

This film is utter pants. Even if you like Romantic comedies and think you can survive the cheese-fest, this film will test your patience to see it through to the end. It is totally predictable, not even funny, and the cringe-worthiness increases as it progresses.

The overall concept is utterly ridiculous. I don't care how in Love you are, you're not going to be someone's Made of Honor if your a bloke unless you already spend your days as a cross-dresser, and even then it would push the challenge of ridicule.

If you're wondering why I watched it, or at least an hour of it, I was on an XL Airways flight and my MP3 player ran out of power. (Honest gov!)

An incredibly assured and affecting feature debut from writer and director Paolo Marinou-Blanco.

For me, this beautifully understated and deceptively simple film was the discovery of the Festival - an incredibly assured and affecting feature debut from writer and director Paolo Marinou-Blanco.

Having long been a fan of Welsh actor Robert Pugh, it's a real treat to see him in a lead role as ex-pat Brit Alex, emotionally closed down and marking time in Lisbon - and he delivers an outstanding performance; intense, poignant and frequently very, very funny. Notwithstanding some powerful speeches plundered from a variety of classic plays (Pugh's character Alex was once an actor) Marinou-Blanco is generally sparse with both his own dialogue and his direction, making the most of the silences and never letting anything outstay its welcome.

In the writing, Marinou-Blanco has also achieved something that (apparently) few others can manage: representing two nationalities without either falling back on caricature or cliché. It also carefully avoids becoming a piece that relies on a clash of cultures or stock 'fish out of water' situations. Culture is here shown to be a more subtle, shifting, ungraspable entity than those dramas would suggest - and this is about alienation of a deeper kind.

The photography is stunning, making Lisbon at once beautiful and oppressive, and there are occasional images that, while entirely naturalistic, haunt you like something from a dream (Alex's encounter with a pack of dogs in a town square at night has a particularly weird resonance, like a glimpse of Hades).

Marinou-Blanco has set himself a tough brief here, tackling the Really Big Questions - a challenge that can so often lead to cynicism or pretentiousness (or both). But it's a trap he never falls into, partly because he finds genuine delight in the everyday and the ordinary, but also because he never loses sight of the need for humour (both for the characters and the audience).

Some of the most important journeys take place without going anywhere, and Alex's begins long before he leaves his apartment - a point made more ironic by his dismal job of recording voice-overs for travelogues of places he has never been while shut in a recording booth at home (his 'cell').

A beautiful, fun, yet nonetheless deeply moving film that demonstrates with absolute conviction and clarity that life is more about the search than the finding.

Entertaining and lighthearted, not the weighty, life-altering work of genius some see

We Pedal Uphill is entertaining enough to keep me watching, which is not a trivial accomplishment considering the fact that I probably have some form of ADD, at least when it comes to watching movies. Unlike other reviewers, I was not bowled over by its power and profound insight into how neurotic our country has become in recent years. Maybe it's because they saw it while Bush was still in office and I didn't.

One of the best things on the DVD is Roland Tec's commentary. It is lighthearted and intelligent and does much to dispel the rather pompous and weighty view people seem to have taken of his movie. He and his collaborators talk about how political some of the earlier-filmed segments were in comparison to the more relaxed and less paranoid view of some of the later segments (in order of filming, NOT of presentation).

In general, the movie is entertaining and well-constructed; but it's not the work of profound, life-altering and transcendent genius some reviewers say it is. The title segment, in which PR folks agonize over an upcoming Presidential cycling photo-op, is hilarious.

A sentimental comedy

Italian Director Pupi Avati works again with Diego Abatuono. The funny comedian has been saved by Avati in 1986, when he starred in Regalo di Natale, in a low career moment. Sandro Lanza is a failed actor and has a role in a televised soap-opera. He never had the great chance of an important movie character, though he was an actor in the most important period of Italian cinema. Three daughters, from different women, take care of him in a sad period of his life. Good performances of the actors, mostly of Abatantuono, who maybe feels this character very personally, because his own career could have been very alike in its failure. Avati talks about Italian cinema's decadence or, maybe, about Italian decadence at all. Unfortunately the movie seems not complete or maybe it doesn't succeed in saying everything the director meant.

A brilliant and emotional film

I don't know if this is one of the best films I have seen. But this is certainly one of the most intelligent. films based on books (and I'm referring to Austen books, I didn't read the novel it's based upon) tend to be irritating, often insulting the original books and the intelligence of their readers. when the film tries to stay "loyal", in many occasions it is nothing but a poor shadow of the original book.

This film is nothing of this sort. Those who made it really loved and understood Jane Austen (and literature in general). Anyone of admires her books will find in this movie lots to think about. And still, it is also a movie, with beautiful and interesting characters, none of them is made ridiculous or flat.

Small movie, but worth every second of watching.
