Lower than where it could have flown

I don't know whether the local 2004 film "Volta" was inspired by "Zsazsa Zaturnnah," although it seems like it since both the main character's superhero alter-egos have hair that are flaming red with their outfits looking almost the same. And not that it matters but the first time I read Carlo Vergara's graphic novel was in July two years ago - a month after "Volta" screened in theaters. Anyway.

Before "Crying Ladies" director Mark Meily left the Regal-produced "Zsazsa Zaturnnah Ze Moveeh" midway production schedule, I had high hopes for this film. But when he left to be replaced by Joel Lamangan (more so the reason being "creative differences"), I wasn't really sure anymore. Not that Lamangan is a bad director; he's just a safe and bland one. But still, I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt since he proved in "Blue Moon," at least to me, that with the right story, he can make a good film.

Ever since it was first published, "Zsazsa Zaturnnah" gained a substantial following. Proof to that is that I never saw my copy of the graphic novel again: it was borrowed by a friend, then a friend of a friend, and so on. The musicale version also created a buzz in certain circuits. The story is about Ada (now totally out-of-the-closet Rustom Padilla), a small-time gay beautician who becomes the feminine superhero Zsazsa Zaturnnah (Zsazsa Padilla) after swallowing a mysterious pink rock that fell from the sky. In his, er, her parallel state, she can lift trees, cars; run at great speeds; and jump at great lengths. And just as any superhero stories, Zsazsa has her share of nemesis, including a giant frog (which looks cute in all its... uh, fakeness), zombies breaking out in a musical piece, and of course, the Pops Fernandez-led Amazonas - a quintet of man-hating alien female lifeforms out to rid the universe of anyone bearing two X chromosomes.

As I've said, it has been two years since I last read the graphic novel so all memories I have of the original source is at best murky. And I've never seen the play yet which leaves me to just the minimal amount of reference. That said, I felt "Zsazsa Zaturnnah Ze Moveeh" could have been way better.

Rustom is a natural for the lead, although he has to contend with co-star Zsazsa Padilla who gets the top billing as the eponymous character. He seems comfortable in the role, but the latter's relatively stronger appeal constantly yanks you out of the character that it's hard to buy the idea that Ada and Zsazsa are the same. (Isn't it interesting that the superhero character bears the same name as the woman who plays her, and then in turn, the woman who plays the superhero bears the same surname as the lead male character?) Mother Lily sure splurged on the special effects, which by local standards (read: Filipino) are more or less fine. ("It's in the rigging naman e...") But what works as a campy romp in paper barely makes it on screen, where it looks silly and at times uneven with songs inserted between longueurs of dialogs. If they planned to make it a musical, why not do away with CGI and use some old-fashioned movie-play set to the likes of "Chicago" or "Dreamgirls?" And since it's aware of its tongue-in-cheek nature, I don't think there's a problem with using a giant cardboard frog. Ah, but local audiences aren't ready for that, I see.

After a somehow promising opening sequence, the narrative takes too long to progress with a lot of subplots taking place. The characters of Pauleen Luna and Alwyn Uytingco as Ada's sister and her boyfriend, respectively, are too arbitrary and the film won't feel short-changed without them. To be fair, Lamangan sometimes captures the feel of the graphic novel and then some (there's a scene her that narrates the Amazona's back story and it looks like a world from the upcoming Zack Snyder film "300") but other times, the movie's transition between the song-and-dance number and fight moments are awkwardly done.

The requisite fight scenes are also disappointing, because first off, Lamangan isn't clearly at home with them. They end up unexciting and clumsily handled. And considering the film's outlook, they serve nothing more than a detour added to make Zsazsa who she really is first and foremost - a superhero.

It's apparent that Lamangan has all the best intentions for "Zsazsa Zaturnnah Ze Moveeh" but there are glaring faults that keep it from being a few notches higher worthy of unqualified recommendation. As such, there will be those who will enjoy the movie, but those with marginal interest won't be held spellbound. To each his own, so to speak.

A Nutshell Review: Happy Holidays

The one thing I like about watching an indie film, is for that whiff of refreshing ideas and story that one yearns after a series of what can be considered rather bland mainstream offerings. I suppose with a relatively modest budget, one gets forced to become innovative in crafting a tale, especially one for an increasingly sophisticated audience, and for all the Christmas-y movies running up to the new year, Happy Holidays was nothing but an absolute delight to sit through.

Written and directed by James Ferguson, Happy Holidays tells of three friends who get together through circumstances around the holiday period where all should be fine and dandy with merry making. However each brings along his own baggage of problems – some become very vocal about their issues, while others pent it all up inside, and we examine and follow how they re-connect with each other after a long absence, and how at the end of it all, their lives would be dramatically altered.

Central to the story is Patrick (Paul Hungerford), who feels that his current relationship with his gay partner is somewhat strained, given his reservations and feeling all worked up for the littlest of details that he deemed to be significant, but not having the will to see those stuff through. And not to mention parental objection as well, as he reveals to Alden (John Crye) who gatecrashes Patrick's plans to spend the holiday season with his lover. Alden brings with him the problems stemming from a break up, as well as the issues with a conversion of religion, while mutual friend Kirby (Thomas Rhoads) whom they chance upon in a diner one day, has to get over the recent death of his father, and surprise to them all, yet still having the composure to being quite the Casanova, cheating behind his wife's back.

But don't be expecting any big bang, in your face tale where feel-good, moral messages get shoveled forcefully down your throat just because it's a season to be jolly. Ferguson crafts a very sensitive tale through a very deft hand of crafty wit in its screenplay, and excellent dialogue amongst characters that feel genuine and as real as you can get with your own get- together with friends. It's a comedy about friendship, family and faith, with some really touching themes about coming to terms, acceptance and reconciliation.

I guess with friends whom we haven't met for a long time, it's always fairly easy to pick up from where we left off, as if it was just yesterday. The bonding returns, the reminiscent of the good old days and for the trio, it also involves the search for a time capsule they buried when they were back in school. But the film very smartly weaves in some real world concerns, and I'm sure most of us would have experienced at some point, where during the festive season of good tidings and goodwill, that the latter gets exploited and taken advantaged of, and even amongst the best of friends, the fine line between being accommodating and on the receiving end of someone's subconsciously obnoxious behaviour, can be crossed.

What I particularly enjoyed about the film, is that it succeeded in its reliance of razor sharp dialogue to become a talkie film that doesn't annoy. You know how crafted dialogue may sound rather artificial, but in Happy Holidays, the dialogue comes across as music to the ears, aided by the excellent delivery by its cast. It has some of the best conversational set pieces occurring in the diner involving a hard of hearing elderly woman, a departmental store, and a bar which involves Kirby's plans for a hot night out going awry.

Happy Holidays turned out to be a quality production with a very good story to tell, surpassing my expectations that it would be a simple, ordinary festive season movie. It has all the necessary ingredients to be feel-good, yet layered with enough pathos and moving moments to touch your heart, particularly in its final act, where it rang home the notion that we sometimes second-guess ourselves a lot more than necessary, rather than to seek out honest and open communications, which is a key to forging basic and deeper understanding. It's currently having a limited run in the USA, so if you know of it playing at a cinema near you, do check it out!

If you liked the book - DON'T WATCH THIS

Wow. What a terrible adaptation of a beautiful novel. Here are just a few gripes. - The screenwriter eliminated two major characters from the book. - Plot has been grotesquely altered. - Voiceovers sound as if they were directly lifted from written passages (which may read well but are not the same when spoken, especially with Chabon's writing style). - The acting is more wooden than a log cabin. (Esp. Bechstein)

  • This is supposed to be set in 1983??? Feels more like 2003...

To be fair I couldn't bring myself to finish watching this movie, so it's possible that it redeemed itself... (sarcasm). I truly hope that no one paid to see this, or at least anyone who read the book hoping for something decent (a la Wonder Boys). I like Chabon as a writer but he should be ASHAMED of this adaptation.

No stars.

Review :

'Tis the season for fright trains, monster nannies, and a killer birthday party

Fast becoming the Filipino "Friday the 13th" in terms of longevity, Regal Films' horror-comedy franchise "Shake, Rattle and Roll" hits the big screen anew this season with its 8th installment. As usual, three episodes with three different set of filmmakers and actors fill up the film's entire running time and the resulting imbalance of the end product either works for or against it. As with previous installments, there will be one that stands out; but along with it, the viewer has to sit through the two that don't. Or vice versa.

Easily the weakest of the three, Rahyan Carlos' "13th Floor" opens the proceedings with a tale of party organizers called to the job one day at a condominium that has a tragic past. Headed by Sonny (Bearwin Meily), the group is tasked to prepare a birthday party for 11-year old Alex (Jolina Reyes). But something's not right. Alex's visitors seem extremely apathetic and really weird things start happening.

How much this episode works for you depends entirely on how well you can take it at face value. As campy horror films go, "13th Floor" functions on the same level as the 1995 Japanese family horror film "Haunted School (Gakko no Kaidan)" only with less verve and a more sloppy direction. Also, if the names of Meily and Keanna Reeves on the credit sequence don't tip you off on its exaggerated tongue-in-cheek nature, it might take you a while to get your bearings on and go with the flow.

As he has shown in "Pamahiin," restraint is far from Carlos' mind. It's a similar case here. Fortunately, his tendency to overindulge on scares and skimp on subtlety is cushioned by the fact that nothing here is to be taken seriously. Besides, at a third less than the overall length of "Pamahiin," this episode barely avoids on overstaying its qualified welcome.

The next episode - "Yaya" - is helmed by Topel Lee, who also directed "Dilim," an entry to last year's Cinema One Originals Film Festival. Treading virtually the same theme, "Yaya" stars the impressive "Star Circle Quest Grand Kid Questor" Nash Aguas as a young boy who believes his new nanny is an "aswang" - a Filipino mythical creature that goes bump at night and eats human innards for dinner.

With crisp storytelling, nice shots, and a few genuinely terrifying moments, Lee's episode delivers the best among the bunch. He's also aided by Aguas' strong performance who, at a young age, surprisingly holds himself on screen better than some actors more than double his age. Iza Calzado as the nanny barely exhibits the creepy ambiguity required of her but that's just maybe because I'm so used to her playing characters on the opposite side of the spectrum.

As if the fuss of rush hour and a service sometimes badly in need of a TQM seminar aren't enough, the LRT gets further bad rep with Mike Tuviera's "LRT," the installment's third and final episode. Here, it's business as usual as a handful of commuters take the last train going home late one night. But soon, something's amiss because the train doesn't stop at any station and no one seems to care that there are people still aboard. Eventually locked inside the main terminal of LRT-2 is Keempee de Leon as the de facto leader of the group, Manilyn Reynes as a mother of an asthmatic child, Eugene Domingo as a religious fanatic, Cassandra Ponti as a nurse every patient would die for, Mico Palanca as a hotheaded yuppie, and a few other younger faces. And they all must stick together if they all want to live because something's lurking in the shadows that wants to eat their hearts out. Literally.

What starts like a promising narrative dives to something more like "Jeepers Creepers," which is not necessarily a bad thing. The thing is, since the whole plot is just a part of an entirety, it's heavily truncated. As such, characters are barely fleshed out (not that it matters in films like this) and there's barely someone to root for. Honestly, I didn't care who lived and who got offed. There's an attempt to humanize the characters of De Leon and Reynes towards the end but it's so awkwardly placed I'm not sure whether to take it seriously. Also, because it's a PG-13 film, gore is severely limited. (Awww, and I was getting in the mood for some "LRT Chainsaw Massacre.")

In the end, "Shake, Rattle and Roll 8" in its entirety is a film that will appeal to those looking for nothing more than unabashed escapism. Personally, there's some fun to be had here, although the best part is stacked in the middle so it might be better off on DVD to be able to skip chapters. Besides, HD digital looks better there.

Who s Quentin ? a critical view and explanation

In Luxembourg, a small country in central Europe, many youngsters are dreaming of making films. Sacha Bachim and his friends are some of those eager young minds. But making a film is much more than taking daddy's handy cam and watching Pulp Fiction. "Who's Quentin?" is a mess...the editing is chaotic the plot...hey was there even a plot? I suggest that those youngsters should continue watching Tarantino movies but not start imitating him. That is why the movie is so poor, it lacks of imagination...of everything! Still amazing how this movie could be screened in a major cinema in Luxembourg. There are a lot of world class amateur films, mostly short films, but this movie in such a bad sound and visual quality(it is a low-budget movie of course and i doubt if there was even used separate microphones) is not worth watching. It is normal that many people left the cinema not amused because in Luxembourg a movie ticket costs around 7 Euro(9.5 US Dollar) and people want to see something for their money. This movie is definitely not worth watching, it reminds me of school-films and i don't think it has earned its place here at this Database.

Gameface delivers

I've never driven over 400 miles to see a film before. I'm glad that I did this past weekend.

My wife and I went to see Gameface at the Dances With Films film festival in West Hollywood.

I had no idea what to expect from the film and was moved by much of what I saw. The performances were great. You'd think the actors were pros who had worked together for years rather than a freshly cast group of newcomers, including one recruited from Craigslist (a gem I gleamed from the Q-n-A after the film).

I have to echo the thoughts of the first user to comment on this film - it deserves to be seen. I want to see it again.

While I'm not in the same place that the main character finds himself in, this movie made me care about his situation and also care about his search for a resolution. Along the way, we were treated to so many memorable scenes and lines. I've still got lines of dialogue going through my head. The interaction between the band members felt so real you'd think the movie was filmed around a real band.

On top of the excellent writing, direction, and editing, the audience is entertained with a terrific soundtrack.

A good trip to the 80's

The film is a funny comedy about a group of teenage friends during the high school period that reveals important questions inherent in youth and tries (successfully) not to be a Brazilian American Pie or a kind of foolishness. Thanks to the talent and sensitivity of the director Arthur Fontes (of Surf Adventures), good actors (Stefan Nercessian, Maria Flor, Dudu Azevedo, Fernanda Paes Leme), the soundtrack is not rock from the 80's(Jorge Well, Tim Maia, Secos and Wet). Pode Crer! is a film that is worth being watched. The kids portrayed in Pode Crer!, Though not alienated, wanted more fun, dates and making plan for the future. Some interruptions of images in super-8 with a little background music break the pleasant narrative displayed on the screen.

Review :

Not as genuine as it thinks it is

Just like a visitor overstaying her welcome and instead insists on continuing to tell her story even if it has all been said before, high-profile film producer Mother Lily further milks the "Fil-Chinese" franchise dry with an overlong pedestrian romantic comedy in "Mano Po 5: Gua Ay Di (I Love You)" directed by Joel Lamangan, one of the most prolific filmmakers in the local scene today.

Which doesn't really matter if it actually had something to say underneath the guise that it's a study on the Chinese culture. The problem is, remove the Oriental trappings and accents and what remains is a bone-dry story that has been recounted a million times. Issues regarding Chinese traditions are mostly superficial. Also, can't Richard Gutierrez and Angel Locsin play a couple smacked in the SAME socio-economic status? Huh? Just once?

Here, Locsin is Charity, a young Chinese woman who has probably lived long enough in the Philippines that she looks less Chinese than, say, Thai. Forced to date different Chinese guys by her ultra-conservative mother (Lorna Tolentino), Charity finds that elusive "love-at-first-sight" in Nathan (Gutierrez), a Filipino veterinarian who faces an uphill battle in impressing his girlfriend's family, as well as competing against international pop star Timothy aka Felix (Christian Bautista) for Charity's affections.

The film trudges too long and doesn't seem to know when and how to end. It takes so many twists and turns that at one point I was seriously hoping the film would take the hard way out (i.e. the non-conventional ending) just as so the film would reach the inevitable denouement and not prolong the protagonists' agony any longer. This wouldn't be the case if the story has an emotional impact but the thesis is so simplistic and tired it fails to elicit sympathy. The acting between Locsin and Gutierrez isn't so strong although the chemistry is. Tolentino doesn't have much to do except speak like a Chinese speaking like a Filipino for most of the time. Same with Boots Anson-Roa as Locsin's grandmother, only mellow.

It's as simple as this: Do you like seeing Gutierrez and Locsin standing in the rain lovestruck upon seeing each other for the first time? Do you like your dialog awkwardly shifting between Tagalog and Fookien with passable accent? And do you like to see Filipino versions of Chinese martial arts epics, albeit with bad blue screen effects? If yes, then this film might just be for you. But if you're looking for a more insightful look on the Chinese culture, you won't find it here. Might as well eat at Chowking and call it a Chinese dinner.

Finally, his step-brother Brian suggests Hawaii, so Peter heads for a resort on Oahu where, as he's checking in, he sees Sarah and her new beau, Aldous, a polymorphously perverse English rocker. The weeping and moping start again, until Peter is rescued by Rachel, a thoughtful hotel clerk who invites him to a luau and to hang out. Although he constantly runs into Sarah and Aldous, Peter starts to come alive again. Will Sarah realize what she's lost, and what about Rachel?

You won't want to be Forgetting this comedy

Prior to the release of The 40 Year Old Virgin, it is likely that few people knew the name Judd Apatow. Now, just three years later, that name has become almost a stamp of comedy quality, with such films as Knocked Up and Superbad following on the heels of The 40 Year Old Virgin. Now, the Apatow steamroller moves forward with Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and once again it has mined comedy gold, with lots of laughs, but also, as with many of the previous film's from Apatow's company, a nice streak of sweet romance to go along with the laughs.

Fogetting Sarah Marshall focuses on Peter Bretter (Jason Segel), a Hollywood composer who's girlfriend, Sarah Marshall (Kristen Bell), is the star of a CSI-style police procedural series. Jason is a bit of a layabout (who also isn't afraid to walk around his apartment naked), and Sarah has decided she has had enough of him, so she is breaks up with Peter, leaving him in a seemingly unending pool of despair.

To try to take his mind of Sarah, he takes an impromptu vacation to Hawaii, but quickly discovers, to his horror, that Sarah is also at the same hotel as him, with her new boyfriend, recently on the wagon British rocker Aldous Snow (Russell Brand). However, while doing his best to avoid Sarah, Peter finds himself falling for a hotel staff member, Rachel Jansen (Mila Kunis).

As with such films as The 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up, Forgetting Sarah Marshall is a comedy that isn't afraid to mine the more vulgar for comedy, nor does it shy away from some rather frank nudity, including plenty of footage of star Segel (who is also the screenwriter). The upside is that, unlike many other sophomoric comedies these days, the raunchier material actually produces laughs. Much of the film's best humor comes from Brand's performance as off the wall Snow. The character has lots of great scenes and lines, capitalizing on the characters seeming insatiable libido.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall doesn't just provide lots of laughs, it also features an involving and touching romance between Peter and Rachel. Both Segel and Kunis have a nice chemistry between them that fuels an involving romance. As the film progresses, we can't help but root for the characters to find themselves together in the end.

In addition to the previously mentioned Brand, the cast of Forgetting Sarah Marshall gives us both great laughs and characters we can be involved with. Segel proves to be relatively low on insecurity as he puts himself almost completely on display (literally). His Peter is an character whose rather unassuming nature wins you over. Kristen Bell makes the films titular character at times apparently self-involved, but also someone who has a soft spot for her ex-boyfriend. Kunis' Rachel is a character that is both no-nonsense and full of sweetness.

In the end, Forgetting Sarah Marshall proves to be another winner from "Team Apatow", and belongs right next to the previous hits from his creative team. If you are looking for both laughs and a dash of romance, look no further than Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

Clever Plot but Hard to Follow

At first I've heard only rumors about this movie, and when I heard that this was mystery-comedy about a magician doing detective work, I knew I had to see it. I finally ordered online a copy of this movie, and because this movie seemed to be something I heard about only in rumors, I had very high expectations. However, I expected a life-changing movie, and I didn't feel this movie was one of them.

In a nutshell, the movie is about an amateur magician, who has a talent for figuring out tricks from just one sighting, who uses her tricks to convince a superstitious village that she is the Goddess. However, where this movie really gets interesting is when there are already other magicians trying to deceive the village, which throws the main character into direct competition with the others to determine who is the true God or Goddess. Just as the title says, this movie is loaded with tricks. It is a lot of fun playing along with the movie in trying to figure out how these different magicians do their tricks, and each trick exposed is more clever than the last. However, the movie falls short in story telling. Because this was based on a ten-episode Japanese TV drama, the movie tries to compress a lot of information into a short time frame, so having not seen the drama, the movie feels crammed and hard to follow.

Nonetheless, I feel this movie is fun and enjoyable overall, but it did not at all meet my extremely high expectations. Despite the uneven pacing of the story, I was thoroughly satisfied with the cleverness of each of the tricks in this movie and feel the movie is worth watching at least once.

Reality bites on married life

After tackling problems that haunt senior citizens within decades after their marriage in "I Wanna Be Happy," writer-director Jose Javier Reyes teams up this time with Star Cinema for "Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo," a Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) entry with a more glamorous look on issues revolving around marriage. This time, it's about a young couple who have to deal with all the hustle and bustle, all the ups and downs that accompany a newlywed life. What ensues is an amusing if a tad spotty film that mixes a little bit of "War of the Roses," "Meet the Parents/Fockers," "Monster-in-Law," and a generous amount of Filipino flavor and sarcasm on the contemporary local culture, Joey Reyes-style.

Real-life pair Judy Ann Santos and Ryan Agoncillo play Angie and Jed, respectively, who tied the knot with each other in a whimsical manner. After being pressured to migrate to the US by his parents, Jed proposes to Angie, his girlfriend of four months, possibly to ensure a reason of staying here in the Philippines. But their relationship soon rears its ugly head as the young couple realize that not all marriages are made in heaven. Fights occur, in-laws meddle with personal affairs, and marital infidelity starts to loom around.

The film pretty much accomplishes what it has to do, succinctly showing the context of a married life and how quirky our culture can seem when we're outside looking in. It's funny when it's in its element although it gets a tad too long with Reyes eager to showcase all the possible angles that leaves the film with more cynicism than innocence. The film has a breezy feel throughout but there are times the biting bitterness of certain plot points gets the better of the supposed lightheartedness of the work as a whole.

Still, this is a film blessed with a terrific cast. While Agoncillo's acting is monotonous, he's more than ably aided by Santos who has a commanding screen presence and a biting sense of humor. But it's when "Kubrador" star Gina Parreno appears on screen that the movie mostly comes alive. As Santos' mother, she steals every scene she's in. I have no idea how much of her lines were exactly from the script or how much were ad libbed; nonetheless, she's a riot. Gloria Diaz plays as Agoncillo's mother and she delivers the qualities required of her haughty character. Indie film-staple actor Soliman Cruz is slightly underused here.

Despite the title that suggests something that goes into revolutionary status, there's no mistaking that at its core, "Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo" is a mass-marketed romantic comedy. Still, all things considered, the film is not only funny and engaging but also unexpectedly sincere and insightful.
